In this lesson, you will be introduced to skeletons and rigging in Maya. When you create a skeleton, it is made up of bones and joints as shown below. The skeleton can be placed inside an object and you can then bind the skeleton to “skin” (bind the skeleton to the model) so that when the joints move or rotate, the model that the skeleton is inside also moves or rotates. Skeletons can be created for characters so that you can create realistic movement of joints. Creating a skeleton with bones and joints and binding this to a model is known as rigging.
